Keller implemented lessons learned from Phase 1 into Phase 2 to improve productivity and mitigate risks in the deep grouting trial for the NWMO.
The project
Phase 2 of the deep grouting trial for the Deep Geologic Repository for Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was completed by Keller during the summer of 2012. Lessons learned from Phase 1 were implemented to improve productivity and mitigate risks.
The challenge
A key objective of the surface-based grouting trial was to evaluate the ability to control water inflows during shaft sinking.
The solution
Phase 2 of the deep grouting trial included the installation of overburden casings, drilling of rock, water pressure testing, and grouting of the drilled holes to 200 m below ground surface. Keller developed and implemented a real-time grout monitoring software tailored specifically for this project. All quality control testing was performed by Keller with independent quality assurance monitoring performed by Golder Associates on behalf of NWMO. Pumping tests were carried out to provide hydrogeologic data in support of the grouting program.
