The project
Supply and installation of a secant pile wall with retained heights of up to 3.5m for a single-level basement which was to provide much-needed additional parking in the area.
The challenge
The basement excavation was to be constructed in difficult ground conditions next to the ocean on the North Shore of Vancouver. The secant wall was designed and constructed to provide long-term water cut-off in its permanent condition. It was essential that piles were founded in native till to ensure that the long-term functionality of the secant piled wall was not compromised.
The solution
Keller hired a competent local pile inspector who managed up to three drill rigs and mapped out the topography of the till layers as construction progressed. He confirmed with the site superintendent when each pile was drilled to the correct level before Keller proceeded to concrete each pile. The success of the project rested heavily on the rigid quality control (QC) procedures be established and followed.
