Keller performed this $80 million project, within the active units of an operating oil refinery.
The project
BP’s ‘Operation Canadian Crude’ planned to build a new crude distillation unit at its existing Whiting Refinery in Indiana.
The challenge
Construction took place within the active units of the operating facility. Approximately 1,000 of the auger cast piles were installed under restricted headroom conditions as low as 12 feet.
The solution
Keller installed over 7,500 auger cast piles for the project. Auger cast piles were between 18 inches and 24 inches in diameter and ranged in depth from 80 feet to 95 feet. Design capacities were confirmed with Osterberg Load Testing. Installation of the auger cast piles included surveying, fabrication, and installation of reinforcing steel, furnishing, and pumping grout, and material testing and inspection.
